Carmen interviews Dr. Joseph L. Graves, author of the book The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America. They discuss the recent controversy over scientist James Watson’s comments about the intellectual inferiority of black people. Watson won a Nobel prize for being one of the people responsible for discovering the structure of DNA.

Dr. Joseph L. Graves is the Dean of University Studies and a professor of biology at North Caroline A&T State University. He is the author of the books The Emperor’s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium, Rutgers University Press, 2001, 2005 and The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America, Dutton Press, 2004, 2005. Dr. Joseph Graves, Jr. received his Ph.D. in Environmental, Evolutionary and Systematic Biology from Wayne State University in 1988. In 1994, he was elected a Fellow of the Council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his pioneering work in establishing the genetic and physiological controls of aging. His research concerns the evolutionary genetics of postponed aging and biological concepts of race in humans, with over fifty papers and book chapters published, and appearances in six documentary films on these general topics. He has been a Principal Investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and the Arizona Disease Research Commission.

As conscious and concerned Americans, we can not allow history to record the 21st century as an era that allowed racist and disparaging ideologies to shackle our doctrine of tolerance and acceptance. Therefore, it is a dismal day when a celebrated scholar, researcher, and biologist utters discriminatory comments. Today, Dr. James Watson has disgraced the honor of Nobel laureate.”

James Watson is as famous for his sexist and racist remarks as he is for his nobel prize. Many people in the scientific community either quietly or openly dislike his character. Because of the tremendous power and influence he still wields in funding agencies and in molding scientific opinions, many are afraid to openly speak against him. There are many back channels in academia open to a man of his stature that can be used for retribution.

Much like we cannot depend on sports stars to be role models for our children, we also cannot depend on famous (if not necessarily great) scientists to be role models of good people either. Sad, isnt it?
