Funnily enough, I get a very similar (although not so eyes-wide-open extreme, perhaps) reaction when people find out I'm Jewish. Although I'm white, my dad is from Scotland and I've definitely inherited his celtic looks (red hair, freckles), and somehow people find it really weird that I'm Jewish.
