ROUNDTABLE: IMMIGRATION
Another episode, another Addicted to Race roundtable. This time around, we’re discussing the issue of immigration, and whether it’s fair to compare the current movement with the civil rights movement. We’re talking with two bloggers who have very different views on the subject. Marisa Treviño is a Dallas, Texas-based freelance journalist who writes the blog Latina Lista, which is about anything and everything from a Latina perspective. Philip Arthur Moore is a Houston, Texas-based student at Rice University who writes the blog The Think, about hip hop culture and issues of interest to black and biracial people.

RANT
The fascination people have with finding out the race of your partner, and the assumptions they make based on that information are the subjects of Jen and Carmen’s joint rant in this episode.

MIXED MEDIA WATCH NEWS UPDATE
Jen and Carmen discuss three recent posts on their blog, Mixed Media Watch. First, Jen questions the premise behind a new book titled Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling: Career Strategies for Asians . Carmen discusses the case of an interracial family in a town near St. Louis, MO who are facing eviction because of a law that prohibits more than three people from living together unless they are related “by blood, marriage or adoption.” The couple is not married, but are raising 3 children and have been together for 13 years. Is this really about marriage, or about race? Finally, Jen discusses the racism that black athletes are facing from white fans in the World Cup .

We’re looking for summer interns!

We’re currently looking for Addicted to Race summer interns! Read below for more info, we encourage you to apply!

Internship Overview:
The Addicted to Race Summer Intern will be responsible for assisting the co-hosts by preparing information for segments of upcoming episodes. This position will have a strong emphasis on research, writing, and idea development. Each intern will be assigned a specific area to work on and will be given the opportunity (and creative license!) to produce a segment of his or her very own at the close of the internship. This is a great way to get experience with podcasting and to learn more about issues surrounding our country’s relationship to race today. The position will require 15-20 hours per week (this includes regular communication with Jen and Carmen, including a weekly meeting conducted via conference call).

Qualifications:

  • Passionate interest in issues surrounding race, ethnicity, culture and identity.
  • Commitment to creating awareness and promoting discussion around these issues.
  • Belief that race is a social construct. Will fight anyone who says otherwise.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and high comfort level in communicating and presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with research and/or experience with issues of diversity a bonus.
  • Summer Interns can be located anywhere geographically. Interns should be extremely organized and motivated as they will work from home and for the most part, they will need to manage their own time.
  • Stipend:
Jen and Carmen’s undying gratitude. We will be your friends forever.

    To Apply:
Please send the following to addictedintern@gmail.com:

  • Cover letter explaining your interest, qualifications, and why you are addicted to race. Also include any segment ideas that you may already have!
  • Resume
