This is a bonus mini-episode in which we share with you an interview that Jen did on New York City hip hop station Hot 97 back on February 12th. The show is Street Soldiers, a talk show that deals with social issues of concern to the hip hop generation. This episode was all about interracial relationships.

RANT:
The ridiculous ways people talk about race is the subject of Jen’s rant today. Not only is race constantly sensationalized, but people talk about as if we were still living in the 1950s!

MIXED MEDIA WATCH NEWS UPDATE:
Hell has officially frozen over! Hollywood has produced a movie about interracial relationships that we actually like! Jen and Carmen review the film “Something New”–a romantic comedy starring Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker.

INTERVIEW WITH DEBRA DICKERSON:
Finally, Carmen will interview Debra Dickerson, author of the controversial book The End of Blackness

“Diversity-speak”–those phrases like “cultural competency” or “tolerance” that mean absolutely nothing and only serve to obscure conversations about race–is the subject of Carmen’s rant today.

Jen discusses a recent Washington Post article about black women and interracial relationships in the Mixed Media Watch news round-up.

GUEST COMMENTARY: UNDERWORLD & UNDERWORLD 2
Guest commentator Eric Hamako discusses the films Underworld (2-Disc Unrated Extended Cut) and Underworld 2. Many works of science fiction have subtexts and this particular series of films has a subtext that can be interpreted as having to do with issues of race and mixed race.

INTERVIEW WITH OCTAVIA BUTLER
Jen interviews renowned science fiction writer Octavia Butler, author of Kindred (Black Women Writers Series) and Parable of the Sower. Her newest work is Fledgling : A Novel.
